CityUHK ranked No. 1 in Hong Kong in Nature Index’s “2025 Research Leaders: Leading Institutions”; Two subjects ranked in the global top 50 and first in Hong Kong

City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) achieved outstanding results in the latest “2025 Research Leaders: Leading Institutions” rankings, released by the Nature Index. CityUHK was ranked No. 1 in Hong Kong, 70th globally and 37th in the Asia Pacific region. This achievement reaffirms CityUHK’s leading position in high-quality research output, exceptional research capabilities and international academic influence.

The “2025 Research Leaders: Leading Institutions” ranking encompasses over 18,000 institutions globally, including universities, research organisations, government departments and other bodies. The Nature Index rankings are determined according to each institution’s article share in top-tier journals, including authoritative journals such as Nature, Science and The Lancet. The current ranking covers over 90,000 original research articles published in the past year, from 1 January to 31 December 2024.

CityUHK’s article share within the top journals in the Nature Index ranks first in Hong Kong, powerfully attesting to the excellent standard and high-quality impact of research produced by CityUHK researchers.

CityUHK's outstanding academic and research prowess has consistently garnered widespread international recognition. In the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings 2026, CityUHK was ranked No, 1 in Asia and No. 2 globally in the "Citations per Faculty" indicator, setting a new record for Hong Kong universities in this category.

CityUHK also performed exceptionally well in the U.S. News & World Report Best Global Universities Rankings 2025–2026. Notably, CityUHK excelled in the "Top 10% Most Cited Publications" indicator, ranking 15th globally, reflecting the high impact and forward-thinking nature of its research output within the international academic community.

CityUHK’s outstanding academic excellence is further exemplified by its elite scholars. 32 CityUHK scholars were included in Clarivate's "2024 Highly Cited Researchers" list, nearly 210 CityUHK scholars have been named among the "World's Top 2% of Scientists". Relative to the university's overall faculty size, CityUHK boasts the highest proportion of top scientists in Hong Kong.
