Economic Development

Since the transformation of its economic structure in 2012, Dongguan's economy has continued to soar. Dongguan’s regional GDP has increased by 5 billion yuan, and the economic aggregate has exceeded 1 trillion yuan in 2021, becoming the 15th "double 10 thousand" city with 1 trillion GDP and 10 million population. Dongguan aims to double its GDP by 2035, striving to exceed 2 trillion yuan in economic aggregate.

Technology and Industry

Focusing on "Sci-tech Innovation + Advanced Manufacturing", the national high-tech enterprises in Dongguan exceeded 10,000, ranking first in the province's prefecture-level cities, second in the province's R&D ratio, top 20 in the "China's Comprehensive Economic Competitiveness Cities". A batch of pillar industries was formed in electronic information, electrical machinery and equipment, textile and clothing, food and beverage, paper and paper products. Dongguan also nurtured emerging industrial clusters such as smartphones. Some renowned enterprises such as Huawei, vivo, and OPPO are from Dongguan.


  • Geography & Climate
    Situated in the heart of the GBA and the Pearl River Delta, Dongguan boasts a unique geographical position. It is nestled north of Guangzhou, south of Shenzhen, and enjoys a panoramic view across the river towards Zhongshan, Zhuhai, and Macau. This strategic location establishes Dongguan as a pivotal hub in South China's trade routes. The city experiences a subtropical monsoon climate with abundant rainfall and a prolonged summer without a true winter. Dongguan's landscape is marked by the proximity of Yinpingshui Mountain in the east and Yantian Reservoir in the south, while its western and northern sides anchor central air routes. Covering a land area of 2,460 square kilometers and a maritime space of 97 square kilometers, Dongguan is a testament to nature's grandeur.
  • History & Culture
    Dongguan's history is deeply rooted, serving as the cradle of Lingnan culture with a county history spanning over 1,700 years. Dating back to the Neolithic Age, primitive communities thrived along the banks of the Dong River. In 214 B.C., under the Qin Dynasty's unification of China, Dongguan was part of the Nanhai Prefecture in Panyu County. It was renamed Dongguan in the year 757 A.D. during the Tang Dynasty. Lin Zexu's historical act of destroying opium in Humen, Dongguan, marked a significant chapter in modern Chinese history.
  • Songshan Lake
    Dongguan City has focused on developing the Songshan Lake Science City, actively participating in the construction of the pilot zone for the national comprehensive science center in the Greater Bay Area, thus fostering the development of an international science and technology innovation center. The chosen site for Hong Kong City University (Dongguan) is adjacent to the southeastern side of Songshan Lake Science City. Songshan Lake, one of the largest ecological wetland parks in South China, is a scenic amalgamation of nature and technology. It is home to more than ten Fortune 500 companies, over 300 high-tech enterprises, and tens of thousands of research personnel. The area, dotted with research institutes and universities, stands as one of the densest clusters of high-end talent in the Bay Area. Integrating cutting-edge technology with the scenic beauty of mountains and lakes, the area boasts a comprehensive infrastructure including libraries, life service centers, and sports facilities, setting a national benchmark for urban development.
